Social Welfare Service

While ample opportunities are offered to play, explore and have fun, The Deens Academy also strives to foster a sense of social responsibility in its students by encouraging them to view world problems in terms how they can contribute. We do this by involving our students in a series of community service projects – this sparks off a willingness in children to reach out and help others and think about the big picture. The goal of getting students to participate in outreach activities is to help them make the connection ‘from me to the world’ and see themselves as an intrinsic part of their community. Ultimately, our goal is to help our students be knowledgeable, responsible, socially skilled, healthy, caring, and contributing citizens of the world.

Community outreach programs

Environment

Environmental consciousness is integral to our enrichment agenda. The focus of this programme is to help children realise how their immediate choices and behaviours impact the future of the planet.  We educate our students about ecology and empower them with ecologically intelligent values like sustainable living and responsible consumption. We encourage a hands-on involvement with environmental issues. We do this through interactions with experts in the field, attendance at events and symposia, encouraging writing about contemporary problems, putting up street plays and participating in public dialogue. Through these many avenues students begin to understand the importance of caring for the environment and feel responsible towards its upkeep. Several of our students are currently spearheading projects on water conservation, pollution reduction and other environmental concerns. The Saahas e-waste drive is one program the children participated in.

Example: I promise 10 note books @ Rs 200, I promise 2 school bags @ Rs 200. etc. Any visitor, parent, teacher willing to fulfill the wish may pickup the card put up on the tree and make the donation in the collection box kept in the library. In return you would get a card that says “I DID MY BIT”. Donation can be done from 8:30am -10:00am from October 7th -14th.

Food a thon open campaign in association with Big Basket and Milaap, collection drive by the children – The children from Grades 2-8 will contribute rice in the empty zip pouches sent and will bring it back on Oct 8th. Encourage the child to fill the bag with a handful of rice every day till the end of the holidays . (Their contribution will be matched equally by Big Basket before it is donated to a deserving NGO).  We will have boxes to collect donation from students. Every child will bring and handover the item to the class teachers.

A select team of our children would be visiting Cottolengo Convent open and performing for the inmates there.

Donation of books open to orphanage Sishu Mandir.

This unique program was an enriching experience for our students who experienced first hand the joy of giving. The unrestrained love, care and empathy that our own children displayed, with their hugs, smiles and selfless sharing were endearing moments which we will cherish forever.
The children of Bal Utsav visited us again for their sports day on 31st may 2013. A detailed report on this activity is in our Deens Diary.
