Dr. Diya Sarah Jacob, MBBS
Hi! I’m Diya Sarah Jacob. I was a student at Deens Academy, and my class was amongst the first few batches that passed out from there. After my 10th I pursued Science (PCMB) in 11th and 12th and at the same time prepared for my NEET exam. At that time I wrote CET, COMEDK and AIPMT as NEET had not yet come into existence. To my luck, I got a good rank in CET and therefore got placed into a medical school in Bangalore itself.

At Deens I had been the Head Girl, Sports Captain, House Captain and Prefect too at various points. Having had all these challenging roles and leadership positions gave me an impetus to face the real world outside.

The 1st and 2nd year of Medical School had pre and para-clinical subjects whereas 3rd and 4th year had clinical subjects.  Dissecting cadavers, meeting long lines of patients all day, every day, pricking your own finger for the testing of blood, these were just the first few hurdles I faced.

4.5 years and 19 subjects later I’m now doing my internship. But it doesn’t end here. This is only the beginning of a very long journey for me. Internship, post graduation, super-specialization… the list is endless. Medicine is hard work but for those of you who do want to take it up, there is no greater satisfaction on earth than healing the sick and seeing the eyes of a grateful patient when you have done your job well.

 

Online-Discipline

We foresee that online classes are going to be the norm for a while now and therefore we request your support in enabling your ward’s learning. At Deens, it is our endeavor to stimulate a normal school day for the children incorporating co-curricular activities in the most effective way possible as per the class time table.

To facilitate virtual learning at Deens we are using the application offered by Microsoft Teams. Each student is provided with a unique email address for the Teams app. and the link for download and steps to install this App.

Student attendance will be taken each period by the facilitator and parents will be notified of the absence of their child. Please note that there will be no repetition of each class, in case a child is absent. We will not enable recording of classes, either.

To facilitate a smooth functioning of the virtual classrooms we request the following online etiquette to be followed by the students and their caregivers.

Virtual classroom space

  1. The Student needs to be seated in a dedicated study space for the duration of the virtual class, with no distractions or access to any other persons. 
  2. Students are requested to maintain silence and not disrupt the class when the session is on. They also need to keep audio and video is on during the session unless requested otherwise by the facilitator. 
  3. Students are expected to use headphones mandatorily, so that there is minimum distraction to them. We advise this over earphones.

Virtual classroom attendance

  1. The classes will be as per the time table, for a duration of 35 minutes and there is a gap of  10 minutes between periods, so that the student can attend to any personal needs, do a quick recap of the previous class independently , and set up for the next period. For students who have classes beyond 12.15 pm, a short lunch break has been factored in.
  2. Attendance is taken for each period by the facilitator. Students are expected to login into each class a few minutes before the scheduled start time of the class. Once the class commences, no student will be permitted to enter the classroom.
  3. Should there be a glitch during a particular class session, the teacher is instructed to end the meeting and set a new class for later on the same day or for the upcoming Saturday of that week.
  4. Parents will need to send a note to the class teacher, in case of technical issues/ absence due to other reasons.

Virtual classroom Decorum

  1. Students are expected to login into each class a few minutes before the scheduled start time of the class. 
  2. Once the class commences, no child will be permitted to enter the classroom. 
  3. Students to keep all books and school supplies handy and organized, timetable wise, to avoid disruptions during class.
  4. Students will not eat/snack during class hours. Water bottles are allowed in the class though
  5. Students are expected to be dressed formally for class sessions. Night clothes and attire that is listed as unacceptable in our policy documents are to be avoided. 

Interaction with teachers during virtual classrooms

  Questions:

  1. Students shall avoid asking rude questions. They need to listen and not interrupt when someone is answering. 
  2. Students shall not annotate unless specifically asked to

Language:

Medium of instruction and communication is English except in language classes

  1. Use of regional/ international languages will be restricted to language classes only
  2. Students will use formal language through the online sessions
  3. Use of abusive/invective language during sessions will result in removal of student from the  class/session

Please note:  Parents are not permitted to interact with their ward or the teacher, while the class is on. In case there is any concern it be communicated through email or ERP portal with the teacher/ Headmistress / Vice Principal/ School Principal.

Homework and Submissions 

  1. Students shall submit their assessments/homework on time.
  2. Late submissions will result in marks being deducted.
  3. Notebook work is facilitated through the Microsoft teams portal, so the facilitator will check the progress of the students notebook work. 
  4. Physical notebooks and workbooks will be reviewed when school opens. 
  5. For Lab experiments, the teacher will demonstrate the experiments and children are expected to record the same in their notebooks. They may even be asked to conduct home assignments and experiments with materials available at home.

Consequences

  1. Students are expected to adhere to all the norms mentioned for the online classes. Failure to do so will entail the following :
  2. First instance  – warning/ removal from meeting/session depending on the issue
  3. Marks will be deducted if deviant behavior continues post 3 warnings.

Some suggestions for easy viewing on Laptops

  2. If you see “Open With” at the top, click on it and select Google Slides. This will help you use the “Page Down” and “Page Up” buttons on the keyboard to go smoothly from one slide to another.
  3. If you see “Presentation” in the top right corner, click on it. You will get a larger presentation.
  4. Use the “Page Down” button on the keyboard to move from one slide to the next.
  5. After you have seen the last slide, click on “ESC” to come out of the presentation you were watching. Close the window associated with that presentation.
  6. Now you can click on the next presentation and see that.

Nurturing and refining young minds is the essence of Science Day scheduled to be held at Deens Academy On 28th February, 2020.  An event held in the honor of our great scientist, Dr.CV Raman  offers an opportunity to recognize exceptional talent, to explore and hone the true potential in the field of science, amongst a crowd of  brilliant minds.

The event is being held to honour and commemorate  the National Science Day celebrated all across India with great enthusiasm on 28th February.

With revered scientists on the panel the school provides an opportunity for interaction and learning with these experts. It aims at sharing ideas amongst students and gives them a chance to initiate, design and create  hands on projects and research under the expert guidance of these renowned scientists.

Tickling the budding inquisitive minds we have the esteemed panel of mentors:

Dr.Lavakare(The fabricator of this programme)– His contributions to the field of science are worthy of a mention as he has immense experience working as The  Senior Adviser, Institute of International Education (IIE-NY), in India; Executive Vice President, Manipal Foundation; Executive Director, US Educational Foundation in India; (USEFI)Adviser, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. As a scientist, he has an analytical mind and a wide interest in various areas of human life – art, music, photography, religion & spirituality. He loves to spend time with young students and plans to give back to them the benefit of his experience.

 

 

 

 

STUDENT TALK ON SCIENCE DAY (click to view) 

Prof.G Srinivasan– An Indian physicist specialized in the field of condensed matter physics and astrophysics, a visiting professor of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and a former research scientist in the Raman Research Institute. He has written multiple books and thesis that have proved revolutionary in the field of astronomy, like- Can Stars Find Peace, What Are The Stars, From White Dwarfs To Black holes:The Legacy of S. Chandrasekhar, Pulsars: Proceedings of the Diamond Jubilee Symposium of the Indian Academy of Sciences, and many more.

Prof.Srinivasan Ramani–  Professor Srinivasan Ramani has taught at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore. Mr. Srinivasan does research in Educational Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Communication. He believes in the System of inquiry.

Dr.Viswanathan Hariharan- Viswanathan Hariharan has experience of over 25 years in the IT industry involving Program Management, Product development, Lean Consulting, Business Development, and Quality assurance. He is currently working as an Associate Professor at BITS Pilani, a dream college for many science aspirants. He has also worked as Program Manager, IBM, and CEO, Harris Jayanti Technologies. Dr.Vimala Oak– Vimala Oak is a Member Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. She has organized various Workshops and Coaching for Children, Parents, Teachers. She uses interactive learning techniques that ignite and engage and nascent learners.

Dr. Anand Oak- Anand Oak is a Ph.D. in physics and has an experience of over 40 years in his field. He focuses on unveiling the latent interest of a student.

Deens Academy is truly honoured to host this intriguing event and would like to extend the invitation to not just like its students, parents, and teachers, but also anyone who is interested in discovering the little scientist that resides in them.

EVENT REPORT- CONSTITUTION DAY by Samikshya Panda Grade 11

In November 2015, our Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi declared the 26th of November to be celebrated as ‘Constitution Day’.

Honouring so, this year’s batch of Grade 11 Political Science students chose their juniors to duly celebrate and learn more about the constitution with.

Our focus was on the primary and secondary grades, as we believed that early learning about the workings of the country we live in would be highly educational.

The second and third grade were shown a presentation of facts about our constitution. They were a highly receptive and inquisitive group, which we truly appreciated. They were aware of current affairs and thus asked critical questions.

Grades four and five were a more challenging and interactive group. Their questions and statements were based on previous knowledge. Their talkative nature was well-balanced with their wit and intelligence.

Grade Six was introduced to intra-class treasure hunts, complete with clues and points for correct answers. While they were jovial and humoured, they posed a memorable experience to us with their keen, curious attitude and high intellect.

Grade seven took part in a constitution quiz competition, with two participants who represented each of their classes. Their awareness and knowledge, paired with unconditional support by their classmates, made the nail-biting event a delight to host. Despite a neck-to-neck competition amongst themselves and with time, the students were extremely thankful and learned many facts.

Grade eight was part of a debate competition based on topics posing India in the present day and age. They were, in many aspects, more well-versed with political happenings than we had expected. Their competent nature extended the event to the next day, when the final round was conducted.

Our overall experience as a class with all the students was rich with information, knowledge and positive challenges. From the impertinent second grade to the proficient eighth grade, we learned management skills and how to think creatively and familiarise concepts with children. This gave us an essential glimpse into our teachers’ lives and we could not be more grateful for the sheer hard work they put in every day.

We hope to be a part of and learn from many more such events to come. Our hearty gratitude goes to Shiva Sir, Tina Ma’am, Shanthi Ma’am and all the teachers associated with the different grades.
