DMUN ( Intra MUN) 2019 Report

Deenites are always up for a challenge and the Model United Nations is definitely the kind of challenge they look forward to. Only a year old, the DMUN stepped up its game with larger participation and increased fervour among students and teachers alike. With a total of five dynamic committees ranging from the International Court of Justice to the Indian Constituent Assembly which were chaired by school alumni because of their extensive experience, the DMUN exceeded all expectations. Under the leadership of Abhilash Madhabushi who served as the MUN secretary general last year as well, the DMUN was an out and out  success. As it is a newly created platform it only makes sense to have new opportunities provided to students with no prior experience. This makes DMUN unique and this is how it has earned its title, a MUN with a difference.

Volksfiesta 2019 – Kindergarten

Volksfiesta – On August 17th at Deens Academy Gunjur campus

  1. Petite parade: A team of 5-7 children who are below the age of 4 ( age as on June 2019) will perform a fashion parade with outrageous designs  and colours on the theme: Chaos to Couture. The time limit for the performance inclusive of entry and exit and introduction is 5 minutes. Music for the event needs to be mailed to us the Volksfiesta team on or before 15th The judgment criteria are ingenuity, presentation,choice of music,  style and adherence to time limit.   2. Eco Raptors : A team of 5 children below age of 5 ( age as on June 2019) perform a Rap song for a maximum of 2 minutes on Save the Planet. Background score needs to be mailed to us on or before 15 August. Judgment Criteria would be clarity and choice of lyrics, choice of music, costume, stage presence and group coordination.   3. Folkids Canvas : A group of 2 artists under the age of 6 years ( age as on June 2019) present a Warli painting on an A4 size paper within 45 minutes. Each School can send upto 2 teams . Registration form link.

Volksfiesta 2019 – Grades 1-5

Volksfiesta – On August 17th at Deens Academy Gunjur campus

  1. Graffiti MS paint: A team of 2 students ( one from Grade 1 and one from Grade 2)  will  create a poster using Microsoft Paint on the topic – Out in the Garden which features a minimum 6 things within 30 minutes with a buffer of 10 minutes for explanations and buffer. No reference material will be allowed inside the competition area. The criteria for judgement would be neatness,  quality of sketching and overall presentation, usage of colour and variety of items ,relevance to topic and adherence to time.  Each school may send a maximum of 2 teams.   2. Greenalicious bake- off: A team of 2 cake artist from Grade 2 & 3 decorate a cake to the theme “Going green with cakes- being greenalicious (green and delicious) . The team would bring their own cake( 1-1.5kgs) with maximum 10 inches width or diameter. They will be given 1.5 hours to decorate the cake. We will grant extra points to original creations than precut and ready made decorations.A small name card ( maximum 4X4 inches) can also be placed in front of the cake with an original name and names of the participant. We will also assist them in an auction for selling the cake after the competition.  Each school can send upto 2 teams. Registration form link.
  3. Comic Strip- My Super hero: A pair of artists from Grade 4 & 5 will create a comic strip of minimal 9 panels on the topic “My Superhero”, within a period of 1 hour. A synopsis or introduction (100 words) can be written and placed beside the comic strip. Each school can send a maximum of 3 participants for this competition. The children will be provided 2 A4 size sheets and 1 regular chart paper. All other stationery and material would need to be procured by the participant. Registration form link.
  4. Smart moves: A team of 4 brilliant geeks from Grade 3 and 4 work to crack various mind games ( individually/ in pairs/ as a team)  like crossword, Sudoku, rubiks cube and math problems of increasing difficulties and levels  to emerge and the quickest and smartest among schools. Each school can send one team. Registration form link.
  5. Danspiration: A troupe of 8-10 dancers from grade 3-5 will perform for 5 minutes ( inclusive of entry exit and stage set up) in a style of their choice on that theme – Swatch Bharath.  Extra marks would be awarded for unique props and styles . The teams will be grades based on performance skills, props and costume, choreography and coordination, adherence to time and theme etc. Teams will lose points for any vulgar moves, profanity in the lyrics and exceeding of time limit. Volksfiesta 2019 – Grades 6-8

Volksfiesta – On August 17th at Deens Academy Gunjur campus

  1. Broadway melody: Hollywood Musical dance drama by a team of 8-10 members  in a ten minute display of talent. The time is inclusive of entry exit and stage set up. This can be preceded by a 1 minute announcement to introduce their presentation. The music of the presentation needs to be from the soundtrack of a Hollywood movie. The judgement criteria would include the following: creativity (Title of the act, props, costume and choice of music), Choreography and overall performance. Teams will lose points for any vulgar moves, profanity in the lyrics and exceeding of time limit. The music needs to be mailed to the organizers on or before 15th August. Registration form link.
  2. Nukkad Natak: A team of 8-10 members  will be given 10 minutes to portray the theme (Gender Equality- where ever there is equality there is property) as a street play.  The street play can be presented in any or all of the languages- English, Hindi and Kannada.  After arriving at the venue, the children would need to paint their faces for the competition. 30% of the points awarded are for the facepaint and costume. The judgement criteria would be content, expression , costume/ usage of props, facepaint , humour and adherence to time. Registration form link.
  3. Turncoat: Students are given topics for debate 15 minutes before the event. Each participant would be given 2 minutes ( 1+1) to speak about the topic. One minute would be for the topic and one minute would be against the topic.  A buzzer will be sounded after one minute to warn the student to turncoat and again after 1 minute to stop speaking. Anything spoken after buzzer will be ignored. Judgement criteria would be Clarity of Thought , Content, Spontaneity in change, balanced approach to the topic, overall presentation.   4. Action quest: A Treasure hunt by team of 4 will solve clues to find locations and undertake tasks to get further clues in format of the amazing race. Each school can send upto 2 teams. Registration form link.
  5. A Show of hands: In this game of dumb charades for idioms and proverbs in the English language, A team of 5 participants will put on their thinking caps and channel their inner linguists.  One member must enact the idiom/ proverb given and the team tries to guess it within 2 minutes. Bonus points will be granted if the team is able to explain the meanings as well as its usage. As the game progresses, participants will be challenged to illustrate the idioms/proverbs  as well as create stories to explain the usage. Registration form link.
  6. Harmoniesta Choir: A school choir of maximum 25 students from grade 6-12 including instrument players will present a song in English for a maximum of 10 minutes inclusive of entry exit and testing. The judgement criteria for this event would be Tone, intonation, Musical effect and Balance. We will provide 2 level stands which can hold 10 singers each. Volksfiesta 2019 – Grades 9-12

Volksfiesta – On August 17th at Deens Academy Gunjur campus

1.Quality Circle Presentation–  A group of  5 students and a teacher/mentor/facilitator. identify a problem in their respective school/locality that needs to be resolved. The team needs to brainstorm on solutions and find ways to implement them. This process needs to be presented with evidence in a 10 minute slot of max15-20 PPT slides. This will be followed by a 2 minutes Q & A by the judges. The judgement criteria would be Choice of project ( 15points) Analysis ( 10 points), Solutions ( 30points) and Outcome ( 45points) . 2. Sonder- “The realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own”. A team of 5 members will create a short film on the topic “I See you” of the duration 10 minutes. The short film needs to be submitted via email on or before 15th August. There will be a 2-minute Q & A by the Judges after each film is screened. The Winner’s short film will be played during closing ceremony.The judgement criteria for the competition is story-content, production, direction, editing, sound quality and effects.Registration form link

3.The Deens Playhouse-A 20 Min Theatre Production : A team of 8 to 10 members  present a theatre production for the time duration of 20 minutes on the topic “Societal and Cultural Impact on Mental Health”. Scripts need  to be designed by the students; plagiarism will not be entertained. The performance will be judged on the following criteria – creativity, dialogue, theme, voice, blocking, characters, facial expressions/body language, props, costumes, entertainment value, and overall presentation. 4.Harmoniesta Choir: A school choir of maximum 25 students from grade 6-12 including instrument players will present a song in English for a maximum of 10 minutes inclusive of entry exit and testing. 5.Glimpse: (Poetry, Poster and Role-play): A team of 5-7 participants from grades 9-12 create a poem on a theme announced on the day of the event. The poem should consist of a definite rhyme scheme having a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 6 stanzas of 4 lines each. The poem needs to be written and presented artistically on an A3 size poster (1/4th Chart paper). The poem will then be recited to a panel of judges and 2 team members can depict the poem through a dance or mime during the recitation. Preparation time 2.5 hours, presentation time will be 5 minutes. All mobile phones will be taken away during the preparation time. They will however be given back after the poster is submitted. All stationary will have to be carried by the participants. The A3 size chart paper will be provided at the venue of the event. The registration fee would be Rs 100 per participant. 6: Dabang Debonair:  ”Are you fierce, Are you Audacious and yet can impress people with your indomitable spirit and charm? Let the competition around you not take the better of you, instead find this platform to assert your unique persona and mental agility to overpower your contemporaries and emerge as the fearless ‘Dabang Debonair’ on the block.  Registration form link. 7.Design Hackathon( in collaboration with DQ Labs) : A 2 day design fest with mentoring and learning with the best in the industry. Each school can send one team of 3-5 members for each of the topics : Architecture, Fashion, Product design, UX/UI, Animation, Visual Art & Communication. A maximum of 25 children from each school can register (one team for every topic). The registration for each team  is Rs 2000/- for which each participant gets a sponsorship of Rs 2000/- off in the registration for the new course at DQ labs. Registration form link

Volksfiesta – 15th to 17th August 2019

We welcome you and your team to our annual interschool fest “Volksfiesta” 15th to 17th August 2019

We believe in fun, free and fair competition. We would be grateful for your participation and will work with you to make it a highly successful event.

General details of the competition:

  • Participants need to bring their respective school ID cards as proof of age and grade
  • Participants will have to be accompanied by a staff member from the school.
  • Participant badges will be given to the participants and to the accompanying visitor, which will be collected from the registration desk
  • Food stalls will be available at the venue for the visitors.
  • First aid facility is provided.
  • Parents of participants are welcome on days of the competition.
  • Adult intervention during any of the events will lead to disqualification and loss of points.
  • Trophies and certificates for Winners will be distributed from 2.30pm onwards August 17th, 2019, during the closing ceremony at TheDeens Academy, Gunjur campus.
  • Decision of judges / referees will be final.

  1. Please email us to confirm your participation with the registration form in the given format in every event.
  2. Registration closes on August 10th .Kindly scan and send the entry forms bearing the names of the participants on or before that day beyond which the entries will not be entertained.
  3. The forms have to be signed by the Head of the Institution.
  4. The number of registrations per event is limited and therefore will be on “First come first served”,basis.
  5. Registration fees is  Rs100/- per participant for all events( * except Design Hackathon and Sports )

When one chooses psychology as a subject for study one must be comfortable talking to new people and forming new acquaintances. Experiencing various situations and being sympathetic to individuals having various problems are vital qualities of a good psychologist. For students looking for lucrative jobs in various fields, having individuals from a particular field talk to them and discuss job markets is great for acquiring perspective and developing an understanding about that particular field of work.
The students of grade 12 of Deens Academy visited Turning Point on 3rd April, 2019 with their psychology teacher Ms. Charlotte Soans. Turning point is an institute that deals with psychological ailments and disorders. The initiated was started by Dr. Sulata Shenoy (PHD. in Psychology) who has around 27 years of experience in the field of Psychology. Dr. Shenoy started off by asking the students what they thought psychology was. She then gave the class a brief summary about the evolution of psychology.
Dr. Shenoy emphasised on how preconceived notions can harm the assessment of a psychologist. She warned against making conclusions about clients even before understanding their problems. She said venting out and talking are in themselves therapy.
Dr. Shenoy encouraged interaction and was keen on bringing out the students’ opinions on various topics. The class went on to talk about the reasons for which psychology is not as developed in India. The students gave many answers. Some said it was because of the stigma society has towards the topic while others felt religious beliefs was the reason. Some also said that many Indian students choose mainstream careers and don’t opt for subjects like psychology because of the uncertainty involved. She also gave the class anecdotes of her own experiences with handling stigma. The class also spoke about how Indian society views mental strength and how people are conscious about the opinions of society. Dr. Shenoy argued that the Indian society provides a framework in which supporting the old and differently abled is the responsibility of their families.
Dr. Shenoy then went on to talk about how psychologists today talk about bringing the body and mind to one place. In the fast-moving world that we live there is great demand for facilities that help in this. Yoga, Tai-chi, meditation and counsellors are paid high salaries in countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and the USA.
Dr. Shenoy then spoke about the strength of the mind and how important it is for a psychologist to understand the mind’s capacity and power in an individual’s life. She emphasised on how positive attitudes and a good value system helps with disorders. From all of this the students realised that having family and friends who are understanding, is essential in cases like these.
The class moved on to discuss the scope for psychology in India and abroad and various careers that the students could pursue. The students were interested to find more about sports psychology, genetic psychology and research in psychology.
The students were then given some refreshments. The students were then taken around the institute where they learnt about play therapy. Play therapy is a good method to bring children to talk. In the case of adults, giving them conversation starters to get them to talk is a great way to acquire information.
The students were taken to a class to observe a remedial therapy work with a boy to improve his spellings. Dr. Shenoy believes that remedial therapy works on studying patterns of children and can be used to improve and disability in cognitive functioning.
The students clarified their doubts and thanked Dr. Shenoy and her assistants for their valuable time and help. The students then returned to their school having gained knowledge from an experienced professional.
